Just type the name, add one space, and then type the number. Then space once and type the page number for that chapter. Type in the name of your first chapter. Virtually all horizontal justification in Word is done with respect tab settings or to the left or right indent (not margins).The TOC 2 (and the other TOC styles) automatically updates, so all of the other level 2 entries should align immediately.
Open the Table of Contents dialog box (see how to create a Table of Contents ). If the tab stop doesn't move together with the marker, drag that to the correct position too. Open the Modify Style dialog box using the Table of Contents dialog box To modify TOC styles in the Table of Contents dialog box while creating a new Table of Contents (or editing an existing one), do the following: 1. If you have used separate numbering for your cover page and TOC (such as Roman numerals) and used page one as the start of the text, then you should still be fine with the additional page and won't need to adjust. On the horizontal ruler, grab the right margin marker and drag it to the same width as the level 1 entry's right margin. Take this into account when numbering pages in the TOC. Note: when you insert a new page for the TOC, it’s going to add a page to the overall document and throw off any existing pagination.Go to the beginning of your paper and insert a blank page for the TOC, which should come after the title page.
You don't want to make any changes once you create a TOC, because any edits in the body of the paper afterward could make your table of contents inaccurate. To type your own TOC, you must finish writing the final draft and thoroughly proofread your paper.
